2008-2009 Lady Roundball Rattlers
|
2009 5A State Champions
In a season so promising for the boy's basketball team of LeFlore, everyone seemed to have forgotten about the Lady Roundball Rattlers. That is, until they solidified their trip to the finals by knocking off Faith Academy in a 63-58 victory at the regional finals in Troy and Fort Payne in a 73-69 triumphant win in Birmingham.
The (25-2) Lady Roundball Rattlers faced (31-3) Brewer in the 5A State Championship game in Birmingham, AL on Friday February 28, 2009 in a historic win for LeFlore Magnet High School and the LeFlore girl's basketball team. LeFlore shut Brewer down with 32 points in the paint. Shanece McKinney and Jocelyn Shaw combined for 48 points while Gabrielle Williams scored 15 points and dished out 5 assists. Shaw led with 29 points with McKinney adding 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Roundball Rattlers played their 2008-2009 season with confidence, humility, and poise; and as head coach Darrell Walton stated to Fox10, "there have been no tears shed this year." Shanece McKinney told Fox10 that she doesn't mind taking a major leadership role with her teammates as senior Jocelyn Shaw spoke that they are "more than teammates." "We're together all the time, so everybody's like a big family," states Shaw which showed in their dominance on the court this year as a cohesive and untouchable team.
From the John L. LeFlore Rattler family we say THANK YOU!
Thank you Coach Darrell Walton

for earning LeFlore Magnet High School its 10th state championship*, 6th title for LeFlore's Basketball Program, 2nd state championship banner for the Lady Roundball Rattlers, and the 1st team to win a state championship in 2 areas. Proving that area makes no difference to the Rattlers.
Congratulations to 3 of LeFlore's girls(MVP Jocelyn Shaw, Shanece McKinney, and Gabrielle Williams) for making the All-American Team. Your phenomenal season showed through your hard-work, dedication and Rattler Spirit that didn't die from a minor switch from 6A to 5A. We love and support you Coach Walton, Lady Roundball Rattlers, and staff. Stay Rattlerfied cause we know you're just warming up. JOB WELL DONE LADIES...A+.
*LeFlore's Powerlifting Team has 3 state championships for 1996, 1997, and 1999.
